In the midst of promoting her new film "Black Nativity" (in theaters now!), Jennifer Hudson graced the cover of Essence magazine's January 2014.

During her sit down with the publication, the "Dreamgirls" star opened up about her personal growth and shared detail about her upcoming album.

Highlights from Miss Hudson's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to Essence!

On her new outlook on life since turning 30:
"I spent my twenties figuring out what I wanted to do, and trying everything. But by 30, my foundation was set. I became confident and clear about the path I wanted to take... Now I've really settled into myself. And I'm stronger than I've ever been."

On her singing career:
"I learned that I am a musician and I am an artist, and they are two different things completely. It's one thing to be a musician, where as before I was just a vocalist. Now I'm tapping into myself being a musician and an artist. So I feel like you will find that on this next album."

On her new album:
"The Jennifer sound is still very soulful and very musician and driven I must say. The music feels like live band, full of tracks. And as far as personality, I feel like it's more of me coming through since I've been writing more. So you're hearing more from my perspective more so than from someone writing for me and telling me to sing. It's more like my expression as a person and as a musician as well. And this time around it's more about lifting people up more so than 'I'm going to sing you this song and sing it to perfection' but again it's more about lifting everyone up."
