“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” Scores $8.8 Million Midnight Opening
Getting a jump start on the weekend, Peter Jackson’s latest flick “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” fared quite well last night (December 12).
Thanks to a legion of loyal followers, the midnight showing brought in a whopping $8.8 million in ticket sales.
And while those numbers are mighty impressive, they fall quite short of the $13 million from last year’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” midnight release.
Starring Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Benedict Cumberbatch, Lee Pace, and Luke Evans, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” follows “the dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, as they continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.”
