ELLE Defends Mindy Kaling Cover Shot
They’ve been receiving flak for zooming in on Mindy Kaling for her Women in TV issue cover, and the folks over at ELLE magazine couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out.
A rep from the publication told E! News, “Mindy looks sexy, beautiful and chic. We think it is a striking and sophisticated cover and are thrilled to celebrate her in our Women in TV Issue."
Critics began stirring up controversy after Zooey Deschanel, Amy Poehler, and Allison Williams all had full body shots for their version of the issue, while “The Mindy Project” star was in black and white and had a much more close-up photo.
Fashionista complained, “Kaling, the only woman of color to get her own cover, is also the only cover image rendered in black and white.' I don't entirely understand the intention behind releasing four covers that act as a set, but painting one subject specifically as the odd-man-out."
Additionally, Jezebel wondered, "Maybe the fact that Mindy Kaling was shot in close-up while the other women were shot in Elle's typical 3/4 fashion is just a coincidence. Kaling's photo is practically oozing with glamour so it's not like we can accuse the magazine of publishing a bad or unflattering shot of her. That said, this isn't the first time that Elle has depicted women who are larger than your average cover model in ways that obscure their bodies from view."
