Gearing up for the second season of "Orange is the New Black," the ladies of the hit Netflix series scored a feature in the February 2014 issue of ELLE magazine.
Check out a few highlights from the ladies' Q&A session below. For more, be sure to visit ELLE!
On "Orange is the New Black":
"It's about showing women for who they are. These are not mass murderers. These are women who tripped - some just slipped on a banana peel."
On her character Alex:
"She's sneaky but she's really smart. She uses her feminine wilds to get what she wants. But also she fell in love with Piper and you know, she got really hurt. You see her be vulnerable, it's pretty cool. I always think of her as a spider. She's just waiting for the final kill."
On relating to the characters :
"I think they are real people in situations where, at least when I read it, I can imagine one wrong turn. Everybody's relatable, so you really put yourself in the center of it."
On her interesting audition:
"I was working at another job at a hospital, and I came into the audition in scrubs. So I walked in there and I remember reading the line, 'I don't f*** dudes for big macs.' And then I'm like, 'Who am I speaking to again?' And they're like, 'Your mother.' [And I said], 'Where am I again?' [They said], 'In jail,' [I said], 'Ok. And there's nudity?' Ok this is going to be a ride that I'll never forget."
On taking the role as Crazy Eyes:
"I didn't even audition for this part initially. I auditioned for another part. They called me back and said, 'We have some really good news for you. They would like to offer you a new role.' And I was like, 'Ok, what's the part?' They were like, 'Crazy Eyes.' I was thinking, what audition did I do that made you think 'Crazy Eyes' is the right part for me? But when I read the script, it was like the most perfect fit."
On finding her inner Red:
"When I went in for the audition, what jumped off the page was, 'Oh I know her.' And that seldom happens in a career. I'd say it's happened three or four times in my life. 'Oh I get this.' And when I open my mouth, she came out like that. On the page it said light Russian influence. I didn't understand that and I did the Red in my imagination and out came this woman fully formed already in my imagination."
