It wasn't what Shaun White was hoping for when he arrived at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi last week, as the snowboarder wound up with a fourth place finish in the halfpipe event.

The red-headed superstar fell on his first run, and despite a good showing in his second run, he finished behind Japan's Taku Hirano and Ayumu Hirano, who won bronze and silver, and Louri Podladtchikov from Switzerland who took the gold.

White was on pace to be the first American man to win three consecutive gold medals in the event, having won in the 2010 Vancouver games and the 2006 Turin games.

Yesterday (February 10), the 27-year-old took to Twitter to deliver a thank you message to fans, saying "Well, I guess this is interesting for me because I've never really taken the time to thank my fans before a competition and everyone who supported me along the way. I can't do it without you. You're the best. Halfpipe Finals is tomorrow. I'm beside myself. I want to do the best, not only for myself, but for you guys. So, wish me luck and here we go!"
