Barbie's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover Sparks Criticism on Social Media
Always willing to turn heads, the editing staff at Sports Illustrated teamed up with a famous Mattel toy for its 50th anniversary swimsuit issue.
Launching its campaign titled "Unapologetic," which aims to attract attention back to the doll after years of struggling sales, Barbie fronts the publication's latest issue in her original 1958 swimsuit.
"As a legend herself, and under criticism about her body and how she looks, posing for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit gives Barbie and her fellow legends an opportunity to own who they are, celebrate what they have done, and be unapologetic," a spokeswoman of Mattel told AdAge.
While both the toy company and the publication have high hopes for the cover and the campaign, its attracted negativity on various social media sites.
Stemming off the slogan "Live by your own terms. How are you #Unapologetic?," Twitter users penned, "@Barbie By having the right body proportions #Unapologetic" and "I'm a non-scale human figuring made from the carbon remains of now extinct lifeforms. And Ken is dreamy. @Barbie #Unapologetic."
