His film "Gravity" is currently up for several nominations at the 86th Academy Awards, but now Alfonso Cuaron has admitted George Clooney and Sandra Bullock weren't his first choice to fill the film's roles.

During a recent interview for "The Hollywood Masters" at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, the 52-year-old director revealed Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr were the original stars in the intense film.

"I had a conversations with Angelina," Mr. Cuaron recalled. "But then she went to do one film, and then she was going to direct [the upcoming 2014 drama 'Unbroken.' Something happens, you part ways."

Alfonso continued, "I think Robert is fantastic if you give him the freedom to completely breathe and improvise and change stuff. [But] we tried one of these technologies, and it was not compatible. And, after that, we [had a] week that we pretended as if nothing was happening and then we talked and said, 'This is not going to work. This is tough.'"

"Gravity" has earned more than $700 million in the box office and has 10 Oscar nominations, including best actress for Sandra and best director.
