She’s plenty radiant on her own, so when Charlize Theron stepped into the golden gown for her J’Adore Dior commercials, she shone like the sun.

In a new behind-the-scenes interview, the “Italian Job” actress discusses the flowy, backless dress that took 1,000 to make.

She shares, “The dress this time — you can see that it’s part of the same family as the dresses we wore in the other campaigns for the last 10 years. There was something about this dress that wasn’t structured to the body and yet had beautiful lines. There was something dancer-esque about it.”

The handmade gown, fashioned in Dior’s atelier in Paris, involved 250 hours of initial work followed by 60 hours of tracing gradients and 750 hours of hand-sewing beads for a cascading effect.

Theron also sang the praises of photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who served as a creative collaborator- “Working with Mr. Mondino has been one of my favorite experiences that I’ve had in my life. To have creativity there must be a tremendous amount of passion. And he is the embodiment of passion.”
