Although she planned on finishing out the week before taking medical leave, Robin Roberts was joined by her sister Sally while announcing on “Good Morning America” Thursday (August 30) that she needs to bow out early.

Just one day before she was expected to take a break from her anchoring duties to begin treatment for the rare blood disorder, MDS, the newscaster told viewers, “I’m having to move up my schedule, some things happened at home.”

Before heading down to Mississippi to help out her mother in the hurricane zone, Robin explained to her Twitter followers, "Dear ones, this is my final morn @GMA for a while. Heading home after the show to be w/ my ailing mom in MS. You'll be in my heart & soul."

While Miss Roberts focuses on her health and family during her extended leave, some big names are expected to fill her seat including Oprah Winfrey, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Kelly Ripa and Chris Rock along with other “surprise guests.”

Check out the video of Robin and her co-host talking on a couch surrounded by viewers as she explains she will be starting her medical leave sooner than expected.
